While most remodels involve working on a particular portion of the structure, sometimes we get the opportunity to really go for it and morph the entire, or nearly the entire, structure.  Here's a sampling of these projects we've done over the years...........

A counseling center emerges from a fixer-upper

Challenge: convert a two-story, beat up single family residence into a state-of-the-art mental health therapy facility.
Solution: Total facelift of the inside and outside of the entire structure; created parking lot and landscaping; all new utilities (electrical service; heating; plumbing; etc.).

The complete transformation of an under-utilized, detached garage into a recreational retreat

Challenge: instead of altering the existing home to provide additional space, could we make better use of their detached garage?
Solution: you bet! Besides the complete upgrade of the inside, we added a patio, trellis and some additional square footage.

Now for the finished product.........

A three-phased, complete transformation on South Hill in Bellingham

Challenge: in three phases, create the near-total transformation of the home, the largest chunks being a kitchen remodel and completing an unfinished basement.

Solution: we spread out three different projects over a four-year period.  Each project affected a single level of the home. The final phase finished the basement space, adding a much needed family room to the floor plan.

Protect our severely chemically-sensitive client from existing indoor pollutants in her new (used) home!

Challenges: 'Normal' levels of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other indoor pollutants posed a life-threatening risk to our client.   We needed to eliminate existing sources of toxic outgassing (sealing all exposed particle board including the edges of doors and the underside of counters); eliminate sources of irritating dust and other particulates (delete all carpeting and drapes); replace the furnace and water heater with high-efficieny equipment w/ state-of-the-art filtration; perform all work in negative pressure so that all the dust and VOC's created during construction were vented to the exterior.

Solutions: The client hired a nationally-renowned expert on healthy homes to create the protocol under which to remodel.  For example, we isolated the garage from the home and then set up the exterior person door with a wall fan so that the garage became a work space with negative pressure.    Even the kraft paper we used to protect the flooring had to be a particular brand and aired out in the garage for a certain period of time prior to entering the home. (The remodeling work itself was straight forward; the jobsite protocol was more unique so the photos herein reveal these strategies.)

This health concern effected the choice and installation method for each and every product.  The specified flooring, for example, had to out-gas in the negatively-pressurized garage for a specific number of days prior to entering the conditioned space. Our experience with green building and healthy indoor air quality in Bellingham and throughout Whatcom County made us a perfect fit for operating under such a stringent environmental protocol.

An entire makeover plus two additions!!

Challenge: salvage what is possible from a 1970’s split-entry home to create a more usable floor plan.
Solution: completely rework the floor plan adding additional space for the kitchen, new front porch and entry. Special attention was paid to maximizing the view of Bellingham Bay and the horse pasture below the house. Rebuilding the deck to create more visual interest and weather protection added a completely new look to the rear of the home.
